Nigeria has the poorest exclusive breastfeeding rate in Africa with about 25%

of children having stunted growth, apart from this, only 30% of children below the age of two years receive the minimum acceptable diet.

To end the Breastfeeding week “Future Assured” the nongovernmental initiative of the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari had an enlightenment walk to inform residents of Abuja of the benefits of breastfeeding, the walk took off from Ladoke Akintola boulevard, through Lagos street to Ahmadu Bello Rd and terminated at Garki International Market.

Mrs Buhari is advocating for exclusive breastfeeding for six months and up to two years with other foods included

This years theme “sustaining breastfeeding together” is meant to encourage the family especially husbands to support their wives to breast feed the child.

The programme is a call for all hands to be on deck to sustain breastfeeding, This means everyone has a responsibility, not only the mothers, but the whole family including the extended family.

During the walk there was a question and answer session to enlighten the community and also a drama sketch by youth corpers.

The walk was in conjunction with the Federal ministry of health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Primary Health Care Development Agency
